After stumping Excel legend, Bill Jelen, on a pivot table trick at a seminar in Akron, Ohio, I found myself co-authoring XL40: The 40 Greatest Excel Tips of All Time: a “coffee table” style book celebrating Excel’s 30th birthday. I contributed many tips, tricks, puns, and what is almost certainly the world’s only Excel Lover’s Guide to Cocktails to the canon of technical literature.

I’ve spent the better part of my career helping organizations across industries transform messy data into decisions. I eventually evolved into the wild and wonderful world of Power BI where I still toil today for a smattering of clients who dare to graduate beyond the spreadsheet. It’s been an exciting time to be in the business of BI.

Somewhere in early 2025, I felt an energy shift - not in spite of having no actual industry specialization for 20 years, but because of it. The energy sector is undergoing one of the most complex and important workforce transformations in modern history, and almost no one was applying serious business intelligence to the problem of how you actually train, credential, and deploy the people who will build and run it. That gap had the name XSzil all over it.

Enter Energy Learning Lab - where the next chaper is being written.

But that “across industries” part it turns out, wasboth my superpower and my unfinished sentence.
